Hank’s Story

When I went to the regular schools I found out I couldn’t read at all. I couldn’t understand why people could read but I couldn’t read. It’s hard, especially when you go to get a job, and I always had to have someone help me fill the job application out.

Because of you, adults like Hank are getting the help they need here in Buncombe County. Hank came to us reading at a kindergarten reading level, He has been working with his tutor Dian, for 13 years and has improved his reading by four grade levels. This progress may seem painfully slow, but for Hank who is profoundly dyslexic, it is significant and life-changing. This improvement made the difference between needing help filling out a job application and being able to do it himself. It also gave him confidence in his reading abilities for the first time.
