Together we can do even more

This year we explored new ways to collaborate with other organizations to expand our reach. Your donations are crucial to sustaining this growth.

The Summer Camp Reading Initiative, in collaboration with Youth Transformed for Life (YTL), was a success. We plan to expand the program to a year-round effort and add a new partner–Christine Avery Learning Center. Your support will help us close the opportunity gap for more than 100 children of color so they can achieve success with reading, writing, and spelling.

We consistently have more than 70 immigrants waiting for a volunteer tutor to help them learn English or study for the U.S. citizenship exam. With your support, we recently added a part-time program associate to create small group classes, assess new students, and match them with additional volunteers to reduce or eliminate the waiting list.

We developed strong partnerships with A-B Tech, Goodwill, and NC Works to focus our Adult Literacy program on students preparing for the High-School Equivalency exams. Your support will help us recruit and train volunteer tutors to work with students to improve their literacy skills and gain better employment opportunities.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

We enjoyed these “before and after” photos of James, who received free, high-quality books through DPIL every month from the time he was an infant until he turned five. He headed off to kindergarten this year with a home library of 60 books. We started in 2015 by mailing to 200 children. Now over 4,400 children receive high-quality books monthly. Your support ignites a love of reading
