Oh, the places we’ll go!

In 2020 Literacy Together created a strategic plan to define and align our goals for the next five years. Your support has brought us to where we are today and will take us to where we are going together!

Where we are

Literacy Together is growing all four of our programs. Adult Literacy has devised two distinct paths for its base of learners, Basic Education and High School Equivalency. The approach is working to mitigate barriers for students and help them reach their personal goals. English for Speakers of Other Languages has added a full-time program associate to reduce the waiting list and expand tutoring opportunities for newcomers to the U.S. The Youth Literacy program has begun a paid tutor intern model for young adults to work with children K-5 in summer camps and after-school programs. And Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library® is now sending free books to over 5,000 children ages five and under in Buncombe County.

Where we’re going

The Adult Literacy program will continue to offer more tutor in-services and establish community collaborations and referrals. English for Speakers of Other Languages is piloting a Workplace English class at a local factory that employs a large number of English learners while also exploring the possibility of a youth ESOL program. The Youth Literacy Program will continue to form new partnerships and relationships with Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools. Our efforts with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library® will expand to serve new mothers at the time of birth through outreach at local hospitals.
